According to the Dallas Morning News (10.24.05), of the 186,000 kids "uprooted in Hurricane Katrina", there are still up to 25,000 that are still not enrolled in any sort of school.
According to Education Superintendent Cecil Picard:
"They're spread out over 47 states. We hope they're being home-schooled or in private schools, but I fear they are not."
Commenting further on the trauma many of these kids faced:
"They're in such a traumatic situation. They were brought to the Superdome, then brought to the Astrodome, and then to Arkansas. I can see where a mother's going to hold onto her kids and not want to let them out of her sight."
