Interesting to see this pop up on the "Fast Company" magazine blog of all places: "Social Networking Evades Schools". Even more interesting is their focus on the recent T + L conference (Dallas) and the opinion coming out of the National School Boards Association.
In particular, the 'how' of teaching kids to socially network safely at school and at home is finally being discussed. Hopefully some common sense will accompany the firewalls:
NSBA's executive director, Anne Bryant, noted:
"It is important to keep in mind that just blocking access to social web sites at school is not the end of the story. Most of the misuse of these sites takes place at home, but still affects the classroom. We have to teach our students about the safe and proper use of social web sites."
