"We must create facilities that serve the community and that enlist the community in service to children and youth."
Just heard from the Reshape Schools Summit organizing team in Portland, OR. Apparently the amazing 2-day summit that took place in mid-May continues to gain momentum. They just released a very early-stage web site that highlights the key take-aways, members, and the on-going efforts to create truly 21st century learning opportunities for all members of the Portland community. Looking forward to its evolution over time.
In my opinion? Probably the most impressive effort of a city trying to re-imagine the entire concept of 'school' across its entire urban complex. And even more impressive is what started as a consideration of building a few new schools has become a re-imagination of 'learning' and communities on a much deeper level.
Rather than just focusing on a place that simply keeps kids "safe, secure and dry", I'm hoping it becomes a template for cities far and wide who want to see what happens when it all comes together. Check out the detailed Guiding Principles for redesigning the schools and learning communities that were crafted by over 200 community leaders who came together those 2 days in May.
