Fellow papa blogger and school design/architect guy, Corey Wheat, just sent me a great email minutes ago about an intriguing graffiti project he noticed at a local school -- North Side H.S., located here in Ft. Worth, Texas.
This is what Corey wrote:
Apparently, the district is planning on repainting the school in the very near future, I assume before the opening of school in September. So, they are letting the students use their creative juices and cultural / street influences to graffiti the building – all under the supervision of parents.
They have been supplied paints, beverages, and even a scissor lift so they can get up high and also access to all points of the building.
Not sure exactly what the messages say for the most part, because I can’t read graffiti, but they are sending messages of empowering the mind, soul, etc.
If this doesn’t scream ‘connecting with the students and THEIR culture,’ I don’t know what does.
I love it! Too bad they're painting over it though...an idea would be to have a competition of sorts, voted on by the community, and the chosen artist gets to design a section of the 'new' wall once it's painted.
